Background
Tesla bought the idle GM–Toyota NUMMI plant in 2010 and turned it into the company’s first full-scale car factory. Model S, then Model X, then the volume 3/Y cars all started here. From the air the campus is a dense mix of original NUMMI halls, later body and paint additions, Giga Press / casting yards, and ongoing construction — including Optimus development space — not a greenfield gigafactory.
